Conservatives welcome Nick Alston as new Police and Crime Commissioner for Essex
Thurrock Conservatives have welcomed the election of Nick Alston as the new Police and Crime Commissioner for Essex.
The PCC role replaces the previously unelected Police Authority, ensuring that the public have a real, direct say in the running of the police. Nick will now be responsible for helping to set local police priorities, including the budget. His campaign in the last few months has travelled across Essex, including several trips to Thurrock.
Welcoming Nick's election, Cllr Phil Anderson said "I am delighted that Nick Alston is our PCC. I have had several meetings with Nick, and I know his priorities are Thurrock's priorities – a focus on anti-social behaviour, visible policing, and a quick response when you call 999. He is keen to ensure local police stations stay open wherever possible, and I am hopeful that working together we can secure the future of our local police station.
"As councillors, whenever people speak to us, one of the issues they raise time and again is crime and policing. It's one of the most important issues our communities face, and people want political leaders to act. This new role gives Nick a mandate to start acting on people's concerns, and I believe that people will come to recognise the real value of having a Conservative PCC over the coming few years."
