Essex Fire service - planned industrial action

Dear Resident

The third 24-hour strike by Essex firefighters is planned for today (9am Wednesday 18 July until 9am Thursday 19 July). Reports are that contingency plans have worked well during the previous two strike days.

The message remains the same – continue to ring 999 for emergencies where required.

More than 100 ECFRS firefighters having signed resilience contracts guaranteeing their availability to provide cover during any periods of staff shortage and many of the Service's retained stations have indicated that they will continue to provide life saving cover during periods of strike action. Thurrock's Emergency Planning team continue to work with partners to ensure their contingency plans are in place.

Everyone can help reduce the risk to their family and home from fires by following these practical tips from Essex Fire and Rescue Service.
1 ESCAPE – make sure you know how to easily get out of your home. Keep escape routes clear and window and door locks handy
2 EARLY WARNING – check smoke alarms every week
3 FIRE SAFE – have a "fire safe" night time routine
4 SMOKING – always extinguish cigarettes properly and keep lighters and matches away from children
5 COOKING – check the cooker is off before you go to bed
6 ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES – turn off and unplug electrical items at night unless they are designed to be left on like a fridge
7 FIRE SPREAD – close inside doors to stop a fire spreading

In an emergency ring 999.
