Thurrock Tories hail taxi victory | Your Thurrock

Thurrock Conservatives have forced the Council's Labour administration to rethink plans for massive increases in taxi charges calling them unjustified.

Wednesday’s Licensing Committee heard of plans to increase the charges for some licenses by up to 1000%. Vice chair of the committee, Tunde Ojetola, said “Thurrock Conservatives have been pushing for this service to be self funding for a number of years.

The plans put in front of us had merit and it is clear that the charges for administering and issuing taxi and other licences must be borne from the applicants, not the Council Tax payer. However plans to introduce yearly applications just ties the Council and applicants up in red tape. Any increase could not be agreed as supporting figures could not be justified and that was not acceptable.”

Following a new recommendation from fellow Conservative Cllr Rob Gledhill, it was agreed that Council officers would return with figures to justify any proposed increases before the committee sits in July. In addition they were also instructed to bring proposals for a phased implementation program for any increases.

Well done, to get a taxi from Grays or Lakeside to Chafford Hundred, around midnight, costs about a tenner +. Hopefully the 5 million just received for transport, can be directed to getting better public transport, especially for C100 and also later at night and weekends. Do you agree Cllr ?

I think all options to ensure that residents and workers are able to commute with minimum difficulties should be encouraged.

Certainly when I was responsible for Highways and Transport I worked with Bus operators to ensure they covered all hours.
