A126 - Letter to Police Chief

John,

Thank your for your last email updating me about Swiftsure Road.

With regret I however have to bring another issue to your attention - in case you are not aware of it already.

Friday/Saturday nights have been come a bit of a nightmare for residents of South Chafford, especially those located closer to Lakeside. This is because the A126 is now being used as a speed circuit by numerous cars.

I have witnessed this on a few occasions. The 'race track' seems to be from the roundabout at the top of the A126 (where it links the A13) all the way down to the first roundabout (next to Mercedez in Lakeside). The speeding is breakneck, notwithstanding the fact that other road users are on the road.

On each occasion I witnessed it, I have reported it to Grays Police station - with the usual response of 'we are aware of it' or 'officers will soon be at the scene' etc. However, even if your officers have been out, it has not dittered the perpetrators. The racing happens week after week, it is increasing in numbers and to me is an accident waiting to happen; talkless of the noise nuisance it is causing to my constituents with the revving of engines or the continuous sound of speeding and braking/screeching.

Can you please ask your officers to monitor the area or just stay there in a visible car for a couple of hours over the nights in question. I would also appreciate any updates you have on the line of action you plan to take.

Happy to discuss.

NB: Copied to Cllr Maney as he has Cabinet responsibility for Crime and Disorder.

Hello

Thankfully I finally find some comment on this problem ! It is just a shame there are no other posts. I live in Kershaw close CH, and 'suffer' this noise on a weekly basis. We live a fair way from the junction bu it feels like its outside our door sometimes the noise is so bad, its unbearable. Its a weekly event, sometimes nights during the week too. Last night for example I was woken at 3.30am, and the noise didnt finish till 6.00am !!!!! something needs to be done about this junction. A redesign of the roundabouts so they cannot use them to do their 'doughnuts' and perhaps speed cameras on the road so they cant do 'drag races' I call the police all the time too, and get the same comments 'we are aware, we have officers on the scene' well if they are on the scene, get them to stop !!!!! How can they let this continue. I've driven that way late at night sometimes on the way home, and nearly had an accident with one car that was going sideways !. Another night I came back to find over 50 cars lined up on the roads ! Something needs to be done, and soon !

Tunde you talk as though this has affected you personally, yet you live nowhere near Chafford Hundred.

As an update:

There is a meeting being arranged with the police early in the New Year mainly to discuss this issue.

I hope that there is no incident over the Christmas period.

Tunde, are you monitoring the chafford hundred discussion forum, www.chcf.co.uk, as many of the issues you raise including this one, seemed to be raised on there first. Maybe you could improve "your speed to market" by monitoring and contributing on the site I mention? What do you think?

There are incidents each weekend. You would know that if you lived locally, as you would be affected and tired from lack of sleep!
