Majority of Thurrock Residents Support Need for More Crossings

A survey undertaken by Jackie Doyle-Price has shown that 90 per cent of Thurrock residents support the need for more river crossings.  60 per cent reported experiencing delays due to traffic congestion more than twice a week and 77 per cent believe the existing Dartford crossing to be a major source of traffic congestion.

Whilst two thirds of respondents agreed that Thurrock has more than its fair share of road infrastructure, 14 per cent believed that the new Lower Thames crossing should be located at option A adjacent to the existing Dartford crossing.  55 per cent felt it should be located to the east of Thurrock.

Reflecting on the findings, Jackie Doyle-Price said, "this survey confirms that everyone accepts the need for more river crossings, and very clear concern that any new crossing must not lead to more congestion in Thurrock.  Whilst I have been arguing that the Government should look at Option D, the business case is not strong enough to justify a project which would be double the cost of Option C.  I am advised by the Highways agency that option D would not deliver any improvement in congestion at the Dartford crossing.  Unless Thurrock council can come up with some strong evidence on air quality and traffic congestion which says otherwise option D will remain off the table".
