The Council and Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corp

At a recent meeting your elected Cabinet called for planning powers to be returned to elected representatives instead of resting with the Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation (TTGDC).

Many residents will have heard of the TTGDC, but who are they?

The TTGDC was established on 29 October 2003 and has planning powers for major developments in Thurrock.

The Government injects capital for large projects in the Borough via the TTGDC - close to £100m in the last 5 years.

The main powers of the TTGDC amoung others is that it operates in the whole of Thurrock - and many residents will be aware of the 'Masterplans' of urban areas which the TTGDC has developed.

There have been many issues over the years, about some controversial decisions made by the TTGDC against the wish of residents - 3 of which I have summarised below:

It is Conservative party policy to return planning powers back to Local Authorities, which means residents (and the elected representatives) will be the people to determine our community.

For the benefit of the political illiterate; the original idea for "Development Corporations", came from the Tories in the eighties, and was championed by Michael Heseltine. They were used to redevelop the Docklands and to overide local opinion and NIMBYism. Your party let the genie out of the bottle, and now you complain?
