09 June 2015 Hogg Lane open to pedestrians and cyclists |
Hogg Lane in Grays was opened to pedestrians and people using buggies and bicycles today (9 June), however it is possible it will have to be closed to all again when works starts to fill the void – estimated at 200 cubic metres. Investigations show the ground is stable underneath the western footpath – on the Chafford Hundred and Badgers Dene side – and it is now safe to allow pedestrians to use it with the void area fenced off. Further investigations are continuing into when and how the remedial works will be completed. Over the past week since the collapse, the council has been investigating the site and used investigators trained in acting in confined spaces. The consultants are completing their report on the cause and recommendations for repair. There has been a collapse in the road and a collapse in the 100-year-old old tunnel under the road where debris has fallen and blocked the tunnel. The council has been liaising with the owners of the tunnel and it is anticipated they may require repairing or filling of the tunnels. For obvious reasons the council is keen to open the road as soon as safe to do so because it is mindful of the effect on local businesses and disruption to traffic in the town. |
