The Thurrock Nepalese are seeking to raise money to fund the rebuilding of a school. Their efforts were started by a generous cheque of £1000 from the Port of Tilbury
Jackie said, "I was fortunate to visit Nepal last year and it is sobering to think that the places I visited are now destroyed. Nepal is one of the major beneficiaries of the UK aid programme, as it should be, we have been friends with that country for 200 years and we should help people who are poorer than ourselves. It has been known that Nepal is uniquely susceptible to flood and earthquake, and much of the aid was given to help the country address this. Sadly it was not enough. I would just add that we have just had an election where some argued we should spend less on helping the less fortunate around the world. I would suggest that they might reflect on what that means for Nepal at this difficult time. We have a moral obligation to help."
