Weekly blog

4th January 2015 - Weekly blog to keep residents updated

Happy new year to all Chafford residents.  I wish the new year is a prosperous one for you.

After a few days off, the holiday is quickly forgotten with the planning application for the 5 classroom Harris Free School coming up on Thursday 8th January (See link for details:Proposed New Harris Primary School)

From discussions with residents, emails and social media, there are mixed feelings about the proposal.  While on the one hand residents want a new school to cater for the growing demand in school places, there is concern about the impact on Mayflower Road and the environment.

I sit on the planning committee so I have to keep an open mind about all planning applications. However as I ward Councillor I have to represent the views of local residents.  To this end I sent my views on the application to the planning officers which led to further discussions with Harris Federation to address traffic issues.

The plan and the details of my comments:
Residents have requested for a new school in Chafford as
the current places were inadequate - due to the growing
population and the academic achievements of the
schools. Residents are however concerned that the 2
increased number of students will add extra weight on
Mayflower Road. This is mainly because Mayflower Road
is a link road and at peak periods it hinders movement
for numerous residents who need access via this route to
other areas. It is also a bus route and there have been
many occasions that the buses are delayed due to the
traffic on the road. Therefore adequate remedies need to
be in place to remove the peak period blockade on the
road. If this is done, residents and local businesses will
be able to move around with minimal disruption and
those who need the access will not be hindered.

We'll see what happens on the night.

IN addition to that, there are the on-going parking issues which Charlie and I are tackling.  The proposed restrictions on MaryRose Close, Chafford Hundred are due for consultation this January and other roads will also be reviewed.

Other long running issues are:
- boy racers
- impact of proposed new development in Lakeside
- addressing the nuisance of the abandoned development off Howard Road (linked to the proposed GP surgery)

I have changed my number from the tax payers phone to my personal number, I will call you back if I am unable to answer.
