Jackie said 'I want the review of trade unions to have a good look at Unite's behaviour at London Gateway. We are seeing the same programme of intimidation as witnessed at Grangemouth. It is unacceptable and it will cost jobs. Why would any shipping liner in its right mind sign a contract with Gateway when the union is encouraging all its sister unions across Europe to boycott any ship that stops there. This is economic terrorism, nothing less.
Good unions work to protect jobs and workers. This is bully boy tactics designed to make sure that it is unite that picks up the membership subscriptions and no one else. The fact is that Unite has no god given right to be the dominant union at Gateway. GMB, Prospect and Community are all active in ports, logistics and engineering.
The local Labour Party is hardly covering itself in glory either. The leader of the council talks about how fabulous the investment is but does nothing to condemn the antics of Unite. So much for leadership. He who pays the piper plays the tune. Labour will never stand up to their paymasters even when it costs jobs. He should remember that his bosses are the local residents that work in our ports not Len McCluskey.'
