I am examining the position with officers and will report back on this site about work-in-progress.
Comments in the Gazette have not been helpful as in my view, health and safety of residents should take priority over any other factors. I sent an article to the Gazette about it and it was published a week later:
I have asked that the Devonshire Road weight restriction issue be reviewed. As far as I am aware, the weight restriction on the road is 3.5 tonnes and this needs to be supported by an appropriate traffic enforcement order. We are all aware that the original purpose for Devonshire Road was to try to divert traffic away from the West Thurrock Industrial area and to provide an alternative to HGV in the Lakeside Basin area. However, this purpose has been defeated already because even without any weight limit, the road does not reduce the traffic on London Road, and secondly, it just transfers the problem to the Treacle Mine Roundabout.
We need to bear in mind the concerns of the residents living in this area (especially with the recent accidents at the junction of Sachfield Drive and the overall protection of life and property is a priority; with that in mind I do not think that the article has served any meaningful purpose. While I am always open to suggestions and positive criticism, raising negative points without realistic alternatives is just gutter politics without cogent suggestions for a solution.
Rosebery Avenue is another example of this, as a priority on taking up the Portfolio I was determined that funding should be made available for the reprioritisation of the road, such that priority will be given to London Road users rather than Rosebery Road users. Therefore in the capital work programme for this year you will note that funding has been made available and work on it will progress soon.
This therefore is not about politics, it is about action in the area which will improve the lives of residents and businesses in the community. In addition to that a further 470,000 has been put into highways to ensure that our roads are bump free, street lights work, broken pavements are repaired promptly and areas of traffic congestion are reviewed with realitic solutions put in place.
I am open to plausible comments on this in conjunction and plan to talk these over with TTGDC.
